A fleet of Hyundai next-gen fuel cell electric cars have successfully driven 190km from Seoul to Pyeongchang in South Korea in Level 4 autonomy. This is the first time Level 4 autonomous driving has been achieved with fuel cell electric cars. Until now, autonomous driving has only ever been demonstrated at a limited speed on some sections of domestic roads; these cars were driven at up to 110km/h.
Five development vehicles embarked on the test drive: two were Genesis G80 autonomous vehicles, and three were based on Hyundai’s next-generation fuel cell electric SUV Nexo. All vehicles were equipped with Level 4 self-driving technology.
The trip began in Seoul on February 2 and covered 190km on the journey east to Pyeongchang. Upon joining the highway, the vehicles moved in response to the natural flow of traffic. They executed lane changes and overtaking maneuvers, and navigated toll gates using Hi-pass, South Korea’s wireless expressway payment system.
“Hyundai’s philosophy for developing autonomous driving technology is to provide the highest level of safety combined with a high standard of convenience that our customers expect,” commented Jinwoo Lee, head of the Intelligent Safety Technology Center at Hyundai Motor Group.
